被忽视的主世界情趣

An unnoticed Overworld delight

草只是草？就是你在躲避苦力怕时踩在脚下的那个东西？错！Minecraft 里其实有很多、很多种草——有矮草丛、高草丛、海草、高海草、矮枯草丛、高枯草从、海带、灌木丛、枯萎的灌木、萤火虫灌木丛，以及——最后但绝不是最不重要的——我们本月的主角：蕨。

Grass is just grass right？That thing you stomp on while running away from Creepers？Wrong！Minecraft has many，many different kinds of grass —— there’s short grass，tall grass，seagrass，tall seagrass，dry grass，tall dry grass，kelp，bushes，dead bushes，firefly bushes，and —— last but by no means least —— our item of the month，the fern。

蕨自 2011 年 5 月的 Java 版 Beta 1.6 起就出现在主世界了，同一个版本还加入了地图和活板门。你知道吗：那也是第一个有官方宣传片的 Minecraft 更新，由 h.a.t films 制作。现在我们经常做预告片，所以回头看看那时的起点也挺有意思的。

Ferns have been sprouting up in the Overworld ever since Java Edition Beta 1.6，way back in May 2011，the same patch that added maps and trapdoors。Fun fact: it was also the first Minecraft patch to get its own trailer，created by h.a.t films。Now we make trailers all the time，so it’s fun to look back at how that started。

不过我们今天要聊的是蕨而不是预告片。蕨类能在主世界里自然生成，常见于丛林、针叶林、积雪针叶林和原始针叶林 群系。它们有时也会被流浪商人出售，有时也能在针叶林村庄的箱子里找到。

But we’re here to talk about ferns，not trailers。Ferns are found in the Overworld，growing naturally in jungle，taiga，snowy taiga，and old growth taiga biomes。They’re also sometimes sold by wandering traders，and occasionally found in taiga village chests。

蕨本身并没什么特别的作用，它只是安静地待在那儿，看起来漂亮又茂盛。当你破坏一株蕨时，有八分之一的几率掉落小麦种子，其余情况什么都没有。但如果你用剪刀去采集，它就会掉落自身，让你可以把它种到别的地方。

Ferns don’t really do much，other than sitting there looking all pretty and lush。When you destroy one by hitting it，there’s a one-in-eight chance that you’ll get some wheat seeds，and a seven-in-eight chance that you’ll get nothing。If you destroy one by hitting it with a pair of shears，though，the fern itself will drop so you can go put it somewhere else。

Somewhere else means a block of grass，podzol，mycelium，dirt，mud，moss，or farmland，or into a flower pot where in my humble opinion they look particularly nice。Just the thing for a minimalist modern build with lots of glass and concrete。When placed on a block，you can bonemeal a fern to turn it into a large fern。But protect your fern from sheep，who’ll happily munch it down if given the opportunity。

Ferns in the real world are a group of plants containing more than 10,000 known species，some of which have been around for as long as 400 million years。They’re different from other plants in that they don’t have seeds or flowers — instead they reproduce via spores。They’re often found in moist，shady locations，like forests。

虽然蕨类在人类的经济价值上没有重要作用，但在文化上却很有趣。它们常出现在民俗传说里，并在 19 世纪末的英国维多利亚时代掀起过一股狂热，被称作“蕨类狂热”。当时世界各地的蕨类被大量采集，蕨类花纹也广泛出现在各种装饰物上。直到今天，蕨类依旧是受欢迎的观赏植物，也是新西兰的国家象征。

While ferns aren’t of major economic importance to humans，they are culturally interesting。They often feature in folklore，and were the subject of a late 1800s craze in Victorian England called pteridomania，where ferns were collected from all over the world，and fern patterns on other items became extremely popular。Today，they’re still a popular ornamental plant，and are the national emblem of Aotearoa New Zealand。

所以，下次如果你想在建筑的空角落里加点小点缀，或是让花园看起来不太一样，我强烈推荐用一株蕨。即便一开始它看起来小小的，但我保证，只要稍微施点骨粉，它一定会“长到你心里”。

So next time you want a subtle accent to an empty corner in a build，or a bit of a different look to a garden，I recommend reaching for a fern。Even if it initially looks a bit small，I can promise that with a bit of bonemeal it’ll grow on you。
